Channeling "Pretty Woman" In An Open Back Dress

2020 marks 30 years since the release of Pretty Woman, the rom-com classic of the modern-day Cinderella, starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. I rewatched the movie recently. The plot was cliche, but there were still touching movements when Roxette’s song It Must Have Been Love started, and I just adored the character Vivian Ward’s 90s L.A. wardrobe: body-con dress, thigh-high patent boots, padded shoulder button-down dress, bermuda shorts suit and the iconic brown and white polka dot dress.

I’m sure the designer Marianna Senchina shares the same sentiment. In her 2020 resort collection, I can see a lot of vintage elements and references from the 80s to early 90s trend. And most important, Marianna successfully channelled the vibe of Vivian Ward, a beautiful creature of sweet and innocent, but in the meantime, sexy as hell.

I especially like the jacket mini dress from this collection. It reminds me of the ruffled hem black dress from Pretty Woman. From the front, the dress looks like a velvet vest jacket. From the back, it has an open back design with tiered peplum waist. It is fully lined which adds extra weight to makes the dress more suitable for a semi-formal event. Are you ready to become the center of attention?

This dress I am sporting in today’s outfit also has a white color version which I also love. Here are a few open back black dress I like at the moment:

For this outfit, I opted for consistent color theme from outfit to accessories to make sure nothing takes away the attention from this dress. Hence, I paired the dress with my Rodo clutch and Malone Souliers pumps which both has black and gold colors. If you’re into Vivian Ward’s rock girl style, you can also pair the dress with a red oversized jacket and a pair of black thigh-high patent boots.

There are some of my favorite Malonie Souliers’ pump which I think are all so timeless, elegant & versatile:

It’s interesting to see fashion design incorporate style references from movies. Apart from Pretty Woman, the top three movies that have best styles on my lists are The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), A Bigger Splash (2015), and Factory Girl (2006). What’s your favorite movies that give you style inspirations? Please let us know.
